One of Asia’s bloodiest conflicts that lasted 25 years and caused the deaths of an estimated 100,000 people – 40,000 of them civilians. It ended in 2009 when the Sri Lankan army overran the final resistance of the Tamil Tigers which had fought for an independent homeland. There have been accusations of widescale war crimes in the closing days of the conflict which have largely not been investigated.
