The written word is incredibly powerful in the hands of a good writer; our newspapers and magazines are filled with them. They create a graphic description of an event or a person that can be long-lasting. But the still image of a scene, a person or an action can stay with you for longer. It can be more powerful but incredibly haunting, especially when highlighting war, death and poverty. Every conflict has produced stellar images of horror and devastation. Birtley always carried his camera along with him. He understood that each image, each scene captured a record of history, brutality and criminality. It also showed hypocrisy and inequality in every corner of the world of today.
